Born and raised in Vivian, Louisiana, Phil Robertson came from a large family with 7 children and little money. Because of the location of his family home in a rural setting near Shreveport, and the aforementioned scarcity of money, hunting became an important part of his formative years.

As a high-school athlete, Phil earned All-State rankings in football, baseball, and track, which afforded him the opportunity to attend Louisiana Tech University on a football scholarship. There, Phil played first-string quarterback – ahead of Terry Bradshaw, who later went on to lead the Pittsburgh Steelers team to 4 Super Bowl championships. Phil said, “Terry went for the bucks, and I chased after the ducks.” After receiving his Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and a Master’s in Education, Phil spent several years teaching in Louisiana schools. Acclaimed as an excellent teacher by his students, Phil came to the conclusion that his time and talents would be better spent in the woods.

Phil and his family, which by this time included his wife, Kay, and four boys – Alan, Jase, Willie, and Jeptha – began a quest to turn his passion for hunting and fishing into a livelihood.

The devotional today is a simple message, that while God can do anything, the miracle, the poof it happens, most times he ask of us to do something simple because we need to do the work.

This particular message is apparently exactly what I needed to hear, because I felt the ping in my heart from it. With the start of a new year, I have two mottos for myself. Be Brave. and Do the Work. I’ve noticed within my own life, I am a planner. I write down all I want to do, then it never goes anywhere from there. Like somehow because I’ve written it down, it’s just supposed to be done. I have list and list of things with only half the things crossed out. Mostly because the things crossed out are the easy things…

‘Duck Dynasty’ star Phil Robertson to receive ‘Free Speech Award’

Phil Robertson, the family patriarch of A&E’s popular reality show, Duck Dynasty, will be receiving the “Citizens United/Breitbart.com” award for free speech later this month. This is the second year the award has been handed out.

Called the “Andrew Breitbart Defender of the First Amendment Award,” it will be given to Phil Robertson at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) to be held in National Harbor, Maryland, February 25-28, 2015.

Phil is the founder of Duck Commander, a Duck call manufacturer, on which the Duck Dynasty show is based.
